Report by John Hunt (Local Visits Team)
We met our host Rennie Chivers, Colchester’s Town Crier, at The Mercury Theatre ready for our guided tour.
The tour commenced at the Roman Balkerne Gateway at 10.30 am and we were taken on a circular walk returning to The Mercury approximately 13.15 pm.
Our morning’s content was based upon an excellent heritage framework and our host, dressed in full costume, spent time giving us all some really interesting insights and background into Colchester’s most important heritage events that have shaped the development of Colchester over the centuries.
He also bought to our attention a number of plaques, memorials and statues and explained their significance and true meaning.
So many of these things are walked passed by people every day without knowledge or appreciation of the events represented by them, hence we were all very receptive to learning about them.
Coincidentally, whilst in the High Street and observing the tribute to Jane and Ann Taylor, who wrote the nursery rhyme Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, a many times great granddaughter descendant of Ann Taylor, who had come to Colchester to see it, appeared and made herself known.
The weather was quite chilly and overcast at times but all in all the tour experience proved to be very interesting, worthwhile, and excellent value for money.
