On 19th June 2024 Stanway u3a Pétanque Group hosted a friendly match at our Lakelands Community Centre venue against members of the Colchester Anglo-French Circle.
18 players attended on the day and the sun was out for a welcome change.
The Anglo-French team toyed with the idea of discussing tactics in French so we wouldn’t know what they were up to! However, I did not hear as much as a “sacre bleu!" (Apparently the French don’t use this phrase much nowadays, it’s a bit of a stereotypical myth along with the beret and onions!).
There were plenty of “Oohs” and “Ahhhs” for the near misses, and the measuring equipment was put to good use to determine which team was holding and how many points were racked up.
Linda Anderson our Chair (and my other half), attended to perform her photographer duties, and captured some very good action shots.
Following end of play we headed into the café for some welcome refreshments and the chance to get to know each other better.
We all had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and there was lots of enthusiasm for arranging another friendly later in the year.
Many thanks to Ray Howard for arranging our Anglo-French Circle opponents.
