What do you know about your family’s past? Were your ancestors landed gentry, agricultural labourers, or domestic servants? Did they live in the town, or in the countryside, in a workhouse or serve in the armed forces? Do you have any old photos of family members which you can’t identify? Do you have old documents, letters, or certificates?
If you want to investigate your own family history, then our group can help with that. We have some available spaces and welcome new members whether beginners or experienced in researching their family history. As this group includes online research, you need to have some experience of using a computer. Libraries have computers for public use and also access to some of the online genealogy websites so even without your own computer or broadband, you can still access them. If you feel you need more computer knowledge, there are courses run by libraries and ACL at https://courses.aclessex.com. email: lifelong.learning@essex.gov.uk
We meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month, except December, between 2 pm and 4 pm in Stanway. Contact the group leader for the precise location. Doors open at 1.30. There is parking onsite and nearby bus stops in London Road. The current charge is £3 a session and includes refreshments.
Each session usually consists of an talk on a relevant subject, a break for refreshments then an opportunity to share successes and problems in members’ own research. Occasionally, the session is a share and tell by group members about their own family history research and findings.
The programme for the next few meetings is as follows:
All group members are invited to make suggestions for our programme. New members who are beginning their own family history research will be given support from other members. We are a friendly bunch and help each other with our research.
Apply to join the group by contacting the Group Leader Jackie Nesbitt on the link above.. The group is currently full so new applicants will join a waiting list until space becomes available.
