According to Harry L. Wilson in 1904 “This new game of golf seems to have too much walking for a game and just enough game to spoil a good walk” something the group often ponder when the going gets tough.
Rest assured the members always exude a calm demeanour under all conditions and are on-hand to assist where required; we like to encourage a more relaxed approach. Golf provides a good way to enjoy healthy exercise, fresh air and some lovely scenery not to mention a convivial atmosphere and refreshments in the clubhouse where congratulations or commiserations are exchanged.
The Stanway u3a Golf Group was formed in 2013 with a view to playing casual social golf over 9 holes at one of several local courses, the main one being Birch Grove. In addition we occasionally play at Forrester park, Millers Barn and Five Lakes. We play in all weathers Monday and Thursday mornings usually starting around 9am. Green fees (usually £15-£20) are the responsibility of the player and are paid directly to the club.
All levels of experience and competence are welcomed although we presume golfers will have had previous experience. If you don't have a club handicap, we have an entry standard. Following discussions with Birch Grove, where we play the majority of our golf, the standard is that you should be able to complete a round of 9 holes at Birch Grove Golf Course in no more than 62 shots and in less than 1 hour 50 minutes. This is to comply with Birch Grove's advice and to ensure you wouldn't be holding up play, not only for u3a members but other golfers using the course. Regretfully we are unable to accommodate beginners.
There are of course some golf etiquette/course rules to be observed eg dress code (no tee-shirts, wear golf shoes etc). Each person must have their own equipment.
We hold four competitions a year. At two of them, mid –summer and Christmas, players are joined by wives, husbands, partners for drinks and lunch in the clubhouse. In addition monthly Medal competitions are held at Birch.
